Mauritius, Legends
Mauritius, situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 2400 kilometres off the South East Coast of Africa is an island of volcanic origin. Almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs and offering over 330 km of platinum white sand, this beautiful island is surrounded by lagoons and offers extinct volcanoes, mountains, waterfalls and luxuriant vegetation to explore on its central plateau. Mauritius’ reputation as one of the best sea resorts in the world has been founded by the white sandy beaches shaded by coconut palms and casuarina trees or as they are commonly called filaos. Most of the best beaches are found on the North, West and East Coasts, fringed by coral reefs with calm sheltered lagoons, ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. Away from the golden shores there a number of museums, fortifications, churches, galleries and colonial houses to explore. Religious festivals, especially Indian festivals are very colourful and are a good way to experience Eastern culture without leaving Mauritius. A trip to Trou aux Cerfs, an extinct volcanic crater is a must during your visit to the island.
