Anguilla Luxury Holidays
With the atmosphere of a sleepy backwater, this flat coral retreat, lying northernmost in the British Leeward Islands, nonetheless attracts a sophisticated and glamorous clientele.
Perhaps they seek the breathtaking beaches, quiet coves and extensive selection of restaurants. Doubtless they enjoy the unique character of the Mediterranean/Moroccan-style hotels.
Most are enticed by the exclusivity of this haven. Anguilla's name, meaning 'eel', is an apt description for an island measuring 16 miles long by just three across, but it belies the outstanding beauty and the warmest of welcomes that are tucked away on this, the Caribbean's best kept secret.
Beaches and water sports
Aguilla is renowned for its 33 unspoilt, tranquil, white sand beaches. Sandy Ground has calm turquoise waters, as do the impressive sweeps at Shoal Bay East and Rendezvous Bay. Other notable beaches include Meads Bay, Shoal Bay West and Crocus Bay.
Diving and snorkelling: A number of ships have been deliberately sunk to create dive sites. Prickly Pear Cays and Sandy Islands are recommended.
Sailing: One of the most popular pastimes; yachts, windsurfers and kayaks are also available for hire and water-skiing can be arranged.
Dolphin Fantaseas in Meads Bay: Swim with dolphins.
Sport
Fishing: Full and half day trips are operated y charter companies to catch Wahoo, Dorado, Kingfish, Sailfish, Marlin, Barracuda and Grouper.
Walking: Explore numerous tracks, from the rocky coastline of Windward Point in the north to the rainforest trail of Katouche and the award-winning nature trail at Cap Juluca.
Horse riding: At El Rancho Del Blues.
Dish of the day
With every type of eating experience available from beachfront barbecues and Caribbean picnics to West Indian buffets and romantic gourmet meals, visitors are spoilt for choice.
Tasty's Restaurant: (A real favourite of ours!) French cuisine with Caribbean flair.
Blanchard's at Meads Bay: A regular winner of the Wine Spectator 'Award of Excellence'.
Cove Castles: Book well in advance to secure one of the seven tables at this romantic hideaway.
Best of the rest: Santorini Restaurant at CuisinArt Resort; Mango's Seaside Grill; Pimms at Cap Juluca Resort; Johnno's; Oliver's Seaside Grill; The Straw Hat; Altamer Restaurant.
Family fun
Families are most welcome at Malliouhana where children can enjoy a state-of-the-art beachfront playground, a range of supervised activities and sports with tuition. Special children's menu are also available here.
