The Italian lakes are among the most idyllic in Europe. Carved out by ancient glaciers centuries ago, each lake has its own unique character and charm. Most famous of all is Lake Como, surrounded by dramatically steep mountains, with picture-postcard perfect villages sprinkled along its shore. Meanwhile, the calmer waters of Lake Garda are an equally emotive sight; especially from the Roman ruins of the southern peninsula of Sirmione.
