Madrid is a thoroughly modern city, very much a product of the
19th and 20th Century, and boasting superb art galleries, shops
and nightlife.
Since 1975 and the end of Franco rule, three million Madrileños have
adhered to the maxim – vivir a tope (‘live life to the full’).
This lust for life is highly infectious – so don’t be surprised to find
yourself sipping sangria at 4.00am. It’s that kind of place!
Entertainment
Bars and cafés line the small square of Plaza Santa Ana. From the
famous Teatro Español on one side, and the old bullfighters’ hotel
Reina Victoria opposite, there are dozens of bars and authentic
flamenco venues in all directions.
The Rastro is a huge flea market, a colourful scene with every kind of
article you could possibly imagine. The Royal Palace and its spectacular
gardens are a must to see.
Spanish masters
Considered one of the finest and most important art galleries in the
world is the Museo del Prado, where you find a superb collection of
Spanish art, including works by Velázquez, Goya and El Greco. The
museum is also home to an impressive foreign collection by such
masters as Rubens, Rembrandt and Botticelli.
