Colony Club, Barbados
Introduction
Mile-high casuarina trees line the grand driveway to this beautiful
resort, set in seven acres of landscaped gardens. On arrival, the
sight of Koi Carp weaving among water lilies i n the entrance hall sets the
tone for the tranquil atmosphere within.
The most sophisticated of the Elegant Hotels group, the Colony Club’s
96 rooms and suites are housed in charming whitewashed buildings with
a pink gingerbread trim. Tropical furniture and wooden ceilings create a
colonial feel, with tropical flowers adding a splash of Caribbean colour.
Some rooms have four poster beds, while others have patios leading right
to the poolside or chairs where you can sit and admire the garden’s
flowers and mango trees.
With no fewer than four freshwater pools dotted among the grounds –
the main one featuring a swim-up bar – it’s easy to find a quiet corner to
relax in. Otherwise, head to the sandy beach for some sun worship or
complimentary water sports, from sailing to water-skiing. Other active
pursuits include tennis on floodlit courts or a workout in the air-conditioned
fitness centre. In addition, a daily water taxi operates to the
Colony Club’s sister hotels, Tamarind Cove and Crystal Cove, where guests
can enjoy all the facilities and restaurants.
A trail of orchids leads to the Colony Club’s own fine dining restaurant,
The Orchid Room, which offers a romantic candlelight atmosphere. In this
elegant setting, the award-winning chef presents Barbadian food with
French nuances, accompanied by fine wines. Alfresco dining comes at the
Laguna restaurant, with its superb views over the gardens and pools to
the sea beyond.
Enjoy a pre- or post-dinner drink in the Planters Cocktail Lounge and
enjoy the sounds of li ve piano music, calypso or jazz, which add a special
resonance to the balmy tropical evenings.
