Touring - South Africa
There’s a reason that South Africa is referred to as a ‘World in One Country’ and that’s because it really does feel that way when you
delve into the array of natural and man-made wonders on offer within her boundaries.
Gourmet cuisine and exceptional wines are prevalent throughout South Africa but the heartland of the genre is undoubtedly the
Winelands region. drive just an hour or so from Cape Town through lush valleys set against magnificent mountain backdrops to
discover private wine farms and their lodges; a gastronome’s dream and encouraging of a very leisurely pace of life.
Self-drive is the preferred option for many and a great choice is to head out from Cape Town, via Hermanus and Walker Bay for
some of the best land-based whale-watching in the world, to the start of the Garden Route renowned for indigenous forests, lakes,
rivers and mountains that plunge to meet pristine sandy beaches at the coastline. The small town of Knysna has a great buzz,
particularly during the Oyster festival; Tsitsikamma National Park will tempt walkers and nature lovers; Plettenberg Bay is a high
quality seaside destination - and that’s just a small sprinkling of the highlights!
Port Elizabeth, at the eastern end of the Garden Route, is the gateway to several malaria-free game reserves; perfect if you have
young children in tow. For those wishing to explore a little further afield, the Zulu kingdom of KwaZulu-Natal has an increasing
amount of high quality accommodation and it’s easy to combine historic battlefield tours or the magisterial drakensberg Mountains
with a few days on the sub-tropical coast near durban.
Top of the list for many discerning travellers is a luxurious safari experience; the perfect marriage of two extremes of lifestyle -
nature in the raw including the ‘Big Five’ and some of the most luxurious lodge-style accommodation, finest cuisine and most
attentive personal services in the world.
And still there’s more; let the train take the strain as Rovos Rail and The Blue Train allow you to enjoy the country’s scenic beauty in
relaxed and pampered fashion.
